It can feel overwhelming to know where to start but that’s exactly why we’re here.
The LMU Upward Bound (UB) and Upward Bound Math & Science (UBMS) programs provide free support to help students prepare for and succeed in college. From academic advising and tutoring to summer programs, college visits, and leadership opportunities, everything we offer is at no cost to our participants.
Who we serve
UB and UBMS serve 9th–12th grade students from:

Westchester Enriched Sciences Magnets (WESM)
-
Inglewood High School (IHS)
Eligible students come from families who meet federal income guidelines and/or where neither parent has earned a bachelor’s degree.
Our services
Students in UB and UBMS benefit from:

Weekly academic advising and tutoring at WESM and IHS
-
SAT/ACT prep and support with college and financial aid applications
-
Social, cultural, and leadership activities, plus community service opportunities
-
Monthly Saturday Academy sessions at LMU during the academic year
-
A six-week summer program at LMU (three weeks commuting daily and three weeks living on campus) — including internships for eligible seniors
Eligibility requirements
To apply, students must:

Attend WESM or IHS
-
Be in 9th, 10th, or 11th grade
-
Demonstrate academic need and a strong desire to attend college
-
Meet federal income guidelines and/or be potential first-generation college students (two-thirds of participants must meet both)
-
Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
Required documentation
Because UB and UBMS are federally funded, we are subject to audits to confirm participant eligibility. Students must provide copies of:

Birth certificate
-
Social Security card
-
Most recent tax return with the student listed (2023/2024)
Application process

Submit the online application:

Submit proof of eligibility documents
-
Participate in a mandatory interview (student and one parent/guardian)

Await admission decision (notifications sent via email)

Admission is contingent on fall grades

Once admitted, both student and parent/guardian must attend orientation
-
Students must participate in the six-week summer program
