Originally from Peabody, MA, Dr. Michael Cersosimo moved across the country to earn his B.F.A. in Film Production from Chapman University (2007) and his M.A. in Guidance and Counseling from Loyola Marymount University (2011). In 2018, he earned his Ed.D. in Educational Leadership with a concentration in Higher Education Administration from the University of Southern California. He is a proud first-generation student. Dr. Mike is passionate about academic advising and ensuring every student’s success.
He has been working in the School of Education (SOE) since 2012. Before becoming Director of Student Success, he advised undergraduate and graduate students in various SOE programs for ten years. As an advisor, he co-founded and led the LMU Advising Collaborative, which is a university-wide initiative in 2017. This community of advisors collaborated, shared best practices, and streamlined information working closely with both the Office of the Provost and Office of the Registrar in an effort to enhance the student experience. He has also served on the LMU Staff Senate for six years, mentored in First to Go, and participated in Alternative Breaks Immersions (Guatemala, Cuba, and Puerto Rico).
Dr. Cersosimo is an active member of NACADA: The Global Community for Academic Advising. He has served on committees and volunteered reading proposals for the association. He most recently served as the Mentoring Chair on the NACADA Region 9 Steering Committee, where he developed and led a mentoring program for its members. He has also presented numerous times at NACADA conferences and published his work in the NACADA pocket guide, Advising is Forever: Sharing Stories to Ignite (or Reignite) Your Advising Spirit. In 2020, he was awarded the NACADA Region 9 Certificate of Merit for Excellence in Advising.
In his free time, he volunteers at Venice Arts mentoring low-income youth in filmmaking classes, which he has been doing for over ten years. In 2014, he was honored at their annual gala for his volunteer work as an artist mentor. During basketball season, you will likely find him at LMU games as he is a season ticket holder. He also enjoys running races, watching films, watching Boston sports, listening to The Beatles, and spending time with his niece, Madeline, and nephew, Benjamin.
