The Center for Trauma-Informed Education (CTIE) at the LMU School of Education provides critical interventions and resources at partner schools in Los Angeles and the surrounding region. Employing a systems approach, CTIE serves as a resource for school communities to establish trauma-resilient learning communities to meet the needs of students, teachers, staff, administrators, and parents/guardians. The Center is committed to achieving a positive impact on social and emotional well-being that supports school communities in the development of self-awareness, positive relationship skills, responsible decision-making, and academic excellence.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Center for Trauma Informed Education (CTIE) is to serve Pre K-12 public, private, and charter schools by assisting them with augmenting, and in some cases developing, trauma-informed learning communities. The social-emotional welfare of teachers, staff, students, administrators, and parent/guardians has never been more apparent. The ever-evolving social, political, economic and educational landscapes triggering cumulative uncertainties, suggests that adverse impacts of these dramatic shifts may be longstanding. Supporting teacher, staff, student, administrator, and parent/caretaker co-creation of sustainable systems of care that embrace self- and other-buffered protections in response to crises, and trauma and its myriad manifestations, will bring promised benefits from which entire school communities will prosper.

Vision Statement

To advance its mission, and assist schools in the creation of campus-based trauma-informed spaces conducive to maximizing school and community excellence, the Center for Trauma Informed Education engages each school with whom they consult in several customized activities including: (a) facilitating listening sessions goal-directed to learning about nuanced characteristics and special challenges of their campus and community, (b) creating tailored curriculum designed to respond to teacher, staff, student, administrator, and parent/guardian immediate and foreseeable needs, (c) facilitating exercises in teacher, staff, and administrator self-awareness, (d) engaging school community audiences in mixed-reality simulation experiences that provide opportunities for school personnel and parents/guardians to practice and rehearse responses to real life school-related scenarios, (e) conceptualizing and co-creating ways of measuring the effectiveness of the collective interventions, and (g) serving as consultants who complement existing campus and school support systems.

The Center for Trauma Informed Education also conducts research to examine both the short- and longer-term impacts of interventions on the social-emotional well-being of teachers, teacher engagement with their students, improved student learning outcomes, decreased administrator burnout, and increased involvement of parents/guardians in the life of the school.

Our Work

At CTIE, we realize that every school community is unique. Our team conducts listening sessions with schools to better understand their unique needs, challenges, and goals. We design and deliver professional development sessions that are thoughtful and relevant to each school's priorities. Our approach is to provide meaningful supports to school communities that empowers administrators, teachers, staff, students, and parents/guardians to discover their strengths and resilience as they embrace opportunities camouflaged as challenges.

All CTIE interventions are accompanied by an evaluation of outcomes relative to the effectiveness and value of delivered services. We strive for continuous learning and improvement.
