Infographic: Bridging Language and Content Learning

This infographic created by CEEL's HQIM LP Coaliton Parten English Learner Success Forum (ELSF)with CreatEd, highlights the importance of integrating language development into math instruction, particularly for multilingual learners (MLLs).  The document introduces the Math Language Routines (MLRs) and the four key Design Principles originally authored by our team at UL, Stanford to create a supportive, interactive learning culture.  The four principles we outlined in our original resource include:
  1. Support Sense-Making: Amplify math language and provide scaffolding for students to grasp concepts.
  2. Optimize Output: Encourage speaking and writing to refine reasoning and deepen understanding.
  3. Cultivate Conversation: Build shared understanding through structured peer interactions.
  4. Maximize Linguistic and Cognitive Meta-Awareness: Empower students to reflect on their reasoning and language use.
The infographic also addresses common limiting mindsets and offers practical strategies for teachers to support MLLs, such as using visuals, facilitating collaborative discussions, and amplifying key language.
