Shannon Malone

Shannon Malone has been in education for almost 30 years, beginning as an Instructional Aid in Los Angeles Unified School District. She began her teaching career as a Spanish teacher at Manual Arts High School, and continued her career in education working for the Pasadena Unified School District as an elementary teacher, an instructional coach, and the district’s first Coordinator of Professional Development. Shannon is currently a middle school Principal in the Pasadena Unified School District. This is her tenth year as a site administrator, with her first six years as an elementary Principal. The inspiration behind her dissertation research was her experience working with students who reside in group homes. She determined that there was a need to improve how we support these children who have experienced trauma and no longer have the support of their families to help them in their academic journeys. Data showed that these students were not performing at the same levels as their peers and that they were more vulnerable to negative adult outcomes. Shannon’s research revealed that in order to provide better learning environments for these students, we must take care of the service providers by providing self-care opportunities, mental health support, and quality professional development. Shannon’s dissertation, “The Circle of Care: Supporting the Academic Achievement of Students Who Reside in Group Homes,” examined how the many service providers from different agencies can improve how they work together to support students who reside in group homes and their academic development.
