Credential and authorization programs are coordinated through the School of Education with the subject matter and bachelor's degree major preparation for the variety of subjects directed by faculty across campus who specialize in the subject(s).
Elementary Education/Multiple Subjects Credential Subject Matter Option
- Multiple Subjects (Liberal Studies/Elementary Education)
- Fulfill all Education Requirements
- Fulfill Subject Matter Competency through one of the following:
- Complete the BA in Education and Learning Sciences (Liberal Studies) major, or,
- Complete any LMU major and include a minimum of one degree-bearing class from each of the following subjects (to meet California 44282b): Writing or Linguistics; Study of Literature; Math or Statistics; Science(s); Social Science; U.S., World, or California History; Art, Drama, Theater or Music; a physical sport or physical dance class, and a Human or Child Development Class. (Course selections made in consultation with a CUTP advisor). Or,
- Passage of all subtests for California Subject Exams for Teachers (CSET) in Multiple Subjects.
Secondary Education Single Subject Credential Subject Matter Options
- Art (Single Subject)
- Fulfill all Single Subject Credential Education Requirements
- Fulfill Subject Matter Competency through one of the following:
- BA in Art History or Studio Art, or BFA in Art and Design, along with all education requirements and coursework, or
- Complete an approved LMU-CTC degree plan for teaching to meet art standards, or
- Passage of all subtests for California Subject Exams for Teachers (CSET) in Art
- Dance (Single Subject)
- Fulfill all Single Subject Credential Education Requirements
- Fulfill Subject Matter Competency through one of the following:
- BA in Dance, along with all education requirements and coursework, or
- Complete an approved LMU-CTC degree plan for teaching to meet dance standards, or
- Passage of all subtests for California Subject Exams for Teachers (CSET) in Dance
- English (Single Subject)
- Fulfill all Single Subject Credential Education Requirements

- Science: Biology (Single Subject)
- Fulfill all Single Subject Credential Education Requirements
- Fulfill Subject Matter Competency through one of the following:
- BA or BS in Biology or Biochemistry, along with all education requirements and coursework, or
- Complete an approved LMU-CTC degree plan for teaching to meet biology standards, or
- Passage of all subtests for California Subject Exams for Teachers (CSET) in General Science and Biology
- Science: Chemistry (Single Subject)
- Fulfill all Single Subject Credential Education Requirements
- Fulfill Subject Matter Competency through one of the following:
- BA or BS in Chemistry or Biochemistry, along with all education requirements and coursework, or
- Complete an approved LMU-CTC degree plan for teaching to meet chemistry standards, or

- Fulfill Subject Matter Competency through one of the following:
- Complete an approved LMU-CTC degree plan for teaching to meet Social Science standards, (includes, but is not limited to, coursework in economics, geography, and history)
- Passage of all subtests for California Subject Exams for Teachers (CSET) in Social Science
- Theatre (Single Subject)
- Fulfill all Single Subject Credential Education Requirements
- Fulfill Subject Matter Competency through one of the following:
- BA in Theatre (or Theatre Arts), along with all education requirements and coursework, or
- Complete an approved LMU-CTC degree plan for teaching to meet theatre standards, or
- Passage of all subtests for California Subject Exams for Teachers (CSET) in Theatre
- World Language (Single Subject)
- Fulfill all Single Subject Credential Education Requirements
- Fulfill Subject Matter Competency through one of the following:
- BA in applicable language - LMU choices - Chinese, German, Italian, Japanese, or Spanish, along with all education requirements and coursework, or
- For Spanish, complete an approved LMU-CTC degree plan for teaching to meet language standards, or
- Passage of all subtests for California Subject Exams for Teachers (CSET) in the applicable language.
Special Education - Education Specialist Credential
- Education Specialist Credential for Mild to Moderate Support Needs
- Fulfill Education Specialist Credential Education Requirements
- Fulfill Subject Matter Competency through one of the following:
- Any of the above listed majors for elementary or secondary education, or,
- Passage of all subtests for California Subject Exams for Teachers (CSET) in any of the above subject matters (recommend Multiple Subjects)
Bilingual Authorization in Cantonese, Korean, Mandarin, or Spanish
- Bilingual Authorization (available for those who pursue/complete a initial credential program (above)
- Pursue/fulfill all Credential requirements from one of the above listed credential programs, including any applicable subject matter competency completion, and,
- Complete Bilingual Authorization education requirements, and,
- Complete/pass California Subject Exams for Teachers (CSET) Language Subtest III in the applicable language.
Teacher Education Department Collaborations
All teaching credential programs offered at the undergraduate bachelor's degree level are provided in active consultation and coordination with the applicable major advisor/department. CUTP works closely with all students and their academic major advisor to design an academic course of study that provides the opportunity to complete both the major and teacher preparation requirements.

Per Federal Regulation 34 CFR 668.43(a)(5)(v), all LMU School of Education credential/licensure programs meet the California state requirements as specified by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) and for the CA Board of Behavioral Sciences as appropriate. The institution has not made a determination as to whether these credential, licensure, and professional preparation programs meet the requirements of states outside of California. If you are interested in practicing outside the state of California, it is recommended that you contact the respective licensing entity of that state to seek information or guidance regarding their licensure and credential requirements in advance to allow for appropriate planning.
