CAST Degree and Credentials

CAST candidates can earn the following jointly or individually:

  • Master of Arts in Transformative Education with either:
  • California Elementary Multiple Subject Teaching Credential
  • California Secondary Single Subject Teaching Credential

The California Multiple Subject (for elementary teachers) or Single Subject (for middle school and high school teachers) Preliminary Teaching Credential authorizes you to teach in a California public school. This California Preliminary Teaching Credential is valid for 5 years. 

After completion of the Preliminary Credential, holders have five years to clear their credential by completing an approved induction program, frequently offered through districts and county offices of education.

Concentrations for the  Master of Arts Degree in Transformative Education:

During the second year of coursework, candidates declare one of three concentrations for the Master of Arts in Transformative Education:

  • Digital Learning
  • Disability Studies and Inclusive Education
  • Educational Policy and Administration
  • Language and Culture 

Hybrid Program Schedule

CAST offers a convenient hybrid schedule that combines online synchronous and asynchronous classes on Saturdays to allow our full-time candidates to continue working as dedicated teachers during the week.

Sample Schedule:

Saturday synchronous and asynchronous online classes meet:

  • Fall and Spring semesters (15-week semester)
  • 9:30 am to 12:00 noon AND 1:00 to 3:30 pm
  • Summer Session I and II semesters (6-week semesters)
  • 9:00 am to 12:00 noon, OR,
  • 1:00 to 4:00 pm

Master of Arts in Transformative Education Degree Coursework - Year 2

An additional 16 units beyond the credential coursework completes the Master of Arts in Transformative Education. Candidates select a concentration as well as complete a research sequence.  

  • Context of Schooling (3 units)
  • Research in Education (3 units)
  • Research Project in Urban Education (1 unit)
  • M.A. Concentration Course #1 (3 units)
  • M.A. Concentration Course #2 (3 units)
  • M.A. Concentration Course #3 (3 units)

 

*Fee Based Courses, Fieldwork, and Teaching Seminar units do not count towards M.A. degree

 

Per Federal Regulation 34 CFR 668.43(a)(5)(v), all LMU School of Education credential/licensure programs meet the California state requirements as specified by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) and for the CA Board of Behavioral Sciences as appropriate. The institution has not made a determination as to whether these credential, licensure, and professional preparation programs meet the requirements of states outside of California. If you are interested in practicing outside the state of California, it is recommended that you contact the respective licensing entity of that state to seek information or guidance regarding their licensure and credential requirements in advance to allow for appropriate planning.
