School Counselor Residency Program

Overview

LMU School of Education collaborates with educational partners to make paid residencies available for select students during the final year of our three-year hybrid program for the M.A./PPS/CWA in School Counseling. These residencies include:

  • A year of high-quality preparation at the partner organization during the final year of the program
  • A one-time, non-renewable stipend for the above year
  • Weekly 1:1 coaching sessions with a mentor school counselor
  • Priority consideration for full-time employment with the partner organization after you graduate

Our current educational partners are:

Does the residency program fulfill fieldwork requirements for pursuing an LPCC?

No, the school counselor program does not fulfill clinical hours for the LPCC. It fulfills 600 of the 800 required fieldwork hours only for the PPS/CWA credential. The remaining 200 hours may also be completed with the partner organization.

How do I obtain a residency?

Please note that expression of interest in a residency does not guarantee that one is available for you. There are two pathways to applying for LMU’s school counselor residency program.

If you are currently employed by one of our partners:

  • Tell your employer you’re interested in LMU’s school counselor residency program
  • Your employer will interview you, notify you if you’ve been recommended to apply, and will outline next steps to take

If you are not currently employed by one of our partners:

  • Apply directly to LMU’s school counseling program
  • If you are admitted, let your LMU advisor know that you’re interested in the school counselor residency program
  • Your advisor will follow up with you about availability and next steps
