Federal Student Aid, is the largest provider of student financial aid in the nation. The U.S. Department of Education awards students to cover expenses such as tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies, and transportation. Apply between October 1 and March 2.

There are four types of financial aid:

  • Grants that do not have to be repaid
  • Loans that have to be prepaid
  • Employment programs, such as work-study, that allow students to earn money and gain job experience while still in school
  • Scholarships that do not have to be repaid
