REAL Transformation

How Transformational Leaders Implement Change:
Institutionalizing a Culture of Accountability and Success

The focus of the CMAST TL program is to institutionalize a culture of active teacher leadership within a school, organization, and community by using data analysis, reflection, problem solving, collaboration, and having the conviction that increasing student engagement and achievement in mathematics throughout an educational community is an attainable goal.

Participants learn how to teach MAST Modules 1-4, how to measure their effectiveness as demonstration teachers and teacher leaders, how to embrace rapid change and constant learning, and how to build a sense of community in an organization so that meaningful change can occur.  Teachers learn how to lead by example, by data-informed decision making, with expertise in both theory and practice, and through collaboration.  Teachers emerge in shared leadership roles within the school, organization, and community. MAST TLs collaborate with researchers, administrators, and students, to find and implement solutions that will increase student engagement in and achievement of mathematics and science.  TLs institutionalize and expand MAST within their sites, organizations, and community as well as take active roles in the CMAST PLC.

CMAST TL Program Participants

CMAST has seven candidates in the CMAST TL Program who will be working throughout three organizations, Alliance for College Ready Schools, Pilgrim School, and Lennox Math, Science, and Technology Academy (LMSTA), apprenticing with CMAST Faculty in teaching the MAST Program to 68 teachers throughout the Los Angeles area.

Current Projects

The CMAST TL Program is developing a National Model within these organizations where teacher leaders (transformational leaders) teach teachers MAST, and where peers aggressively collaborate to move their professional learning forward through MAST and into CMAST Action Research that sustains a CMAST professional learning community.

CMAST is actively seeking funding to implement a residency model (Los Angeles Math/Science Residency) that has been designed from the research connected to MAST in Action and the CMAST-TL program in Action,

CMAST is collaborating through technology with Oregon State faculty to mentor teachers who are pursuing a master's degree in teacher leadership for math/science education at Oregon State with a goal of connecting these teachers to the CMAST-TLs thereby expanding the collaborative network required for effective professional development, design & implementation, and action research.
