A two-day institute at LMU during the last two days of June where teachers and partner organizations who apply and are selected to become part of the CMAST Professional Learning Community (PLC) challenge their teaching practice, take risks, and embrace change as they work together to explore and find solutions to teaching and learning that will increase student engagement in and achievement of mathematics and science.
Teachers and participating organizations who are interested in becoming part of the LMU-CMAST collaborative community of practitioners complete an application process where they commit to the following: participating in MAST for a minimum of one year, attend two summer institutes, demonstrate a willingness to move teaching and learning forward, and embrace moving through disequilibrium. The summer institute provides different opportunities for a variety of CMAST educators. Participants who are new to the MAST program are introduced to MAST Modules 1-3, see MAST in action, and create an action plan for implementing MAST in their classrooms.
Returning participants will choose their MAST focus area from Modules 1-3 and actively collaborate in refining their action plan for MAST implementation in their classrooms within each of these Modules. Participants who have excelled in MAST and have achieved a measurable increase in student engagement in and achievement of mathematics or science will be actively engaged in MAST Module 4 to transform teaching and learning in their classroom and school.
Participants who have been selected as potential transformational leaders will be introduced to the CMAST TL program to learn how to teach and institutionalize MAST within their school and organization. The CMAST PLC works together to create a teaching and learning culture in the classroom, school, and organization that embraces tenets of the MAST program.
