REAL Teaching
Teaching Standards to Engage and Retain:
Building a Culture of Trust and Success
The
focus of MAST Module 1 is to build a culture of trust and success by
organizing and presenting information in innovative and active ways
that stimulate students’ critical thinking processes and long term
retention of academic content.
Expert practitioners
collaborate with teachers in designing differentiated instruction that
addresses essential content, supports students in interacting with this
content and with each other, and reflects a thematic presentation of
the content within the context of telling a story. Throughout this
learning process, connections between and among the content are created
and explored illuminating a cohesive, coherent, story being told by the
teacher that resonates with the students. The story connects students
to past and present learning experiences, hooking their imagination and
piquing their curiosity. Within the context of this story, students
are required to, and supported in, exploring possibilities in learning
the content through a balance of higher and lower cognitive questioning
techniques. Students frequently demonstrate their understanding
through quick checks for understanding that inform the teacher’s
telling of the story; thereby, ensuring that students are an integral
part of the learning process. They become active participants in the
learning process and are equipped to effectively communicate about
their learning of the course content.
