CMAST faculty will schedule an observation with the participating teacher and conduct at least one-hour (or full period) observation in the teacher's classroom. These formal observations occur four times a year (September, December, March, and May). During a formal observation, MAST faculty or MAST TL generates an observation script that describes student actions connected to teacher actions, and designs guiding questions that lead a teacher to discover the areas of focus for moving their practice forward. This evidence is used to complete the appropriate MAST Module rubric and write the individual action plan (IAP) that will guide the MAST faculty and organizational support for the semester. The MAST faculty or MAST TL observer and participating teacher collaboratively debrief the observation using the IAP and evidence collected on MAST rubrics to move teacher practices forward.

Faculty will observe the teacher during an unscheduled visit to collect evidence (MAST rubric). These informal observations will occur 5 times during the year (October, November, January, February, April). Evidence from these observations is used to inform the MAST faculty or MAST TL and the participating teacher on progress toward moving practice forward. The MAST faculty or MAST TL observer and participating teacher collaboratively debrief the observation using the IAP and evidence collected on MAST Module rubrics to move teacher practices forward. The goal is for teachers to be observed consistently and participate in collaborative de-briefs monthly. This is the optimum time required to exponentially shift teaching practice.
