AdmissionWho is eligible for a Resident position in the L.A. Math and Science Residency?Recent college graduates or career changers with a B.A. or B.S., preferably in mathematics, engineering or STEM related fields (minimum 3.0 GPA). Applicants must have strong math or science content knowledge and a desire to pursue a teaching career and become a highly effective math or science teacher and future transformative leader in Los Angeles urban schools serving low income and minority students.
What tests must I take to apply for a Resident position?All Resident applicants must pass the
California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST) 
and submit their score report along with their application.
Must pass or show proof of registration for the
California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET)
Single Subject Test in their desired subject area. See Test Selection for more details. Must submit original copy of passing score by start of the program, August 1st, 2011.
The GRE is not required for LAMS.
Am I eligible for the L.A. Math and Science Residency if I already possess a Preliminary California teaching credential?No, the L.A. Math and Science Residency is designed for aspiring teachers who do not have a teaching credential, even preliminary credentials. If you posses a credential and wish to earn a different credential, that is permitted.
Am I permitted to transfer from my current teacher-credentialing program to the L.A. Math and Science Residency?Yes, but only if you have completed 50% or less of the program.

- As a Resident, you will receive:
- $18,000 living stipend in addition to the full tuition scholarship
- Apple MacBook Pro laptop to use during the residency year as well as other innovative forms of instructional technology
- Content specific instructional resources and books provided by the Center for Math and Science Teaching at Loyola Marymount University
You are eligible for health insurance through LMU as a full time
graduate student but not through your charter management organization
until after the residency year.
How am I paid during the Residency year?Your stipend is paid monthly from August through June by the charter management organization you are assigned at.
What additional forms of financial aid are available to me?Once admitted to the program, Residents have the option to explore additional financial aid options through our
Financial Aid Office for Graduate Students. Keep in mind that as a Resident, you will receive a full tuition scholarship and will only be responsible for paying the fees associated with the credential program.

• 6th Grade Multiple Subjects
• Middle School Mathematics
• High School Mathematics
• Biology
• Chemistry
• Physics
What kind of credential can I earn?Residents teaching at the 6th grade level will earn a CA Preliminary Multiple Subjects teaching credential.
Residents teaching 7th-12th grade will earn a CA Preliminary Single Subject teaching credential in their specific content area (Foundational Level Mathematics, Mathematics, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, or Physics).
Will I earn a Masters degree from Loyola Marymount University?No. Residents will complete a total of 15 graduate units in the School of Education during the residency year funded by their tuition scholarship. Residents have the option of completing their Masters with LMU after the residency year and are responsible for associated tuition and fees.

Do I qualify for health benefits?You have the option to sign up for a health insurance plan as an LMU Student. You have the opportunity to sign up a family member in your coverage plan as well. You are responsible for all expenses associated with your health insurance plan as stipulated in the LMU Bulletin 2011-2012.

Is there a chance I remain at the school I trained at?Your training school site will have first priority in hiring you after the residency year.
Do I have the option of completing the requirements of a Masters degree from Loyola Marymount University's School of Education?Yes, you have the option to pursue a Master's Degree in Urban Education (additional 18 units). You will be responsible for all tuition and fees associated with completing the requirements of the degree.
