RESIDENT TEACHERS

A new generation of urban teachers in Math and Science

BENEFITS               ELIGIBILITY               TIMELINE

LAMS Residents are trained through a cognitive apprentice model to increase student engagement and achievement. LAMS Residents take part in pre-service guided teaching apprenticeships alongside an experienced mentor teacher, serving as co-teachers in the mentors’ classrooms and
focusing on planning/processing, teaching, and collection and analysis of student performance data.

Residents take masters’ level coursework in partnership with LMU, based on the best available research and empirically validated practice, which provides residents with the mathematical or scientific content expertise and skills to effectively teach in urban schools.

Residents learn to use data to drive decision-making and engage in critical conversations with their mentor and the CMAST Professional Learning Community to become transformative educators and effective teachers in mathematics or science.

Residents are value-driven in their professional practice and embody the TCRP and MAST values of highly effective teachers:

  • Math or Science as an exuberant way of life
  • Passionate belief that all students can learn mathematics and science
  • Communicate and collaborate to educate
  • Aggressive and positive perseverance through challenges

“Those that know, do. Those that understand, teach.” - Aristotle

"Leadership is the process of influencing people by providing purpose, direction, and motivation while operating to accomplish the mission and improving the organization." - Army FM 6-22
