MAST in Action
Two CMAST TLs, Gerry Vargas and Mark Friedman, are presenting MAST in Action at the science conference at Palm Springs in October.
Germany Conference
CMAST Faculty presented a paper, How Involving Secondary Process Transforms a Culture of Failure in Mathematics to a Culture of Accountability, Self-Efficacy, and Success in Mathematics, at the Mathematics Education into the 21st Century Project. The focus of the international conference is "Models in Developing Mathematics Education." The conference was at the Dresden University of Technology, Germany, from September 11-17, 2009.
Classroom Management Session
On Wednesday, October 21, from 5:00pm - 7:00pm, CMAST Faculty will hold a classroom management session at LMU-CMAST. During the session, learn how to establish a norm for quiet when introducing an activity or lecture. Discuss how to effectively manage the following behaviors: (1) excessive talking whenever there is a gap in instruction, (2) inappropriate use of language, and (3) habitual tardiness and/or being unprepared. Discover how to use movement in the room to improve time on task for individual students and groups of students. Participate in a collaborative problem-solving session to address your management needs within the classroom.
Family of Schools
On Saturday, November 7, from 8:30am - 1:00pm, CMAST Faculty will lead a Professional Development Seminar for the Family of Schools. The seminar is "Getting your Students to 'Bloom': Effective Methods of Incorporating Higher and Lower Cognitive Questions." It is designed for 4th, 5th, and 6th grade teachers who are interested in how to effectively incorporate interactive questioning that strengthens mathematical thinking and supports long term retention. Learn how thoughtful, rigorous questions and questioning techniques during instruction can be used to create more interactive lessons, affording more opportunities for critical thinking. Learn how to utilize student responses to inform instruction and deepen student understanding of mathematics. Participants will integrate varying levels of questions within instruction and develop a plan of action for consistent implementation of questioning techniques.
