Teacher Program: 2017 STARTALK-LMU Mandarin Teacher Summer Institute

Program 1: Chinese Bilingual Teacher Education

The Chinese Bilingual Teacher Education (CBTE) program prepares qualified Mandarin teachers to teach in both Chinese and English in K-12 bilingual immersion or foreign language classrooms. Successful graduates will complete a 3-in-1 program: a Single or Multiple Subject Teaching Credential, a Master of Arts degree in Bilingual Elementary or Secondary Education and a Mandarin BCLAD Authorization.

Applicants admitted into the program will become part of a cohort (no larger than 20), in which students will work toward the 2-year "3-in-1" program. During the second year of the program, students who successfully complete the coursework will be assigned to local elementary or secondary schools for the student-teaching experience or for an internship. The CBTE program meets the California teaching requirements through a research-based curriculum delivered by expert faculty. Small class sizes, along with the support and guidance from the faculty, administrators and staff, will ultimately lead to the certification of Chinese teachers eligible to teach at any elementary or secondary school in California and in many other states.

The next cohort will begin in May 2017. Upon acceptance into the School of Education, Chinese-proficient teacher candidates will take two pre-service credential courses (continuing Chinese bilingual teacher candidates will also take 2 courses). Our tenth STARTALK grant will provide substantial scholarships for summer tuition. The program will also provide for the costs of CSET and CBEST tests. Program 2: Certificate in Teaching Mandarin

What is the THE CERTIFICATE IN TEACHING MANDARIN in preK-12 classrooms?

Loyola Marymount University (LMU) is offering a professional development certificate in Teaching Mandarin in PreK-12 Classroom this summer, beginning May 2017. This hybrid (online) program is taught in Mandarin by experienced and exemplary instructors and is geared specifically for Mandarin speakers and teachers in immersion, bilingual/dual language and heritage language programs for the purpose of increasing their instructional skills. Course content is designed for credentialed Teachers and non-credentialed teachers who have intermediate or advanced skills in Mandarin. The 12-unit continuing education program of study is offered through a combination of on-site, online, and video-telecast meetings.

  • Course 1 - Content Based Instruction

Late April - mid-June 2017 - requires several Face-to-Face sessions on Saturdays (2-3 times) plus several Online and Webcast sessions.

  • Course 2 - Practicum in Teaching Mandarin (during the Student Summer Program)

June 19 - June 30, 2017 - Face-to-Face sessions during the Student program

  • Course 3 - Assessment

June 19 - June 30, 2017 (one webinar session only during the Student Summer Program.); and
September - November 2017 (Online and Webcast sessions - no Face to Face)

  • Course 4 - Chinese Grammar Pedagogy

January - February 2018 (Online and Webcast sessions - no Face to Face)


Credentialed and non-credentialed and heritage language teacher candidates will complete this 4 hybrid course-series offered through LMU Extension for 12 credit hours. Upon completion of this Summer Institute, participants will:

  • Deepen knowledge and skill in teaching Chinese grammar (Chinese Grammar Pedagogy course)
  • Expand knowledge of content-based Mandarin language, with focus on the arts and movement education (Content-based Instruction in Mandarin and Methods in Content-Based Instruction)
  • Apply new skills in content instruction in Mandarin and engage in reflection about their practices (Practicum in Mandarin)

Important Information

Only those who are credentialed teachers and have successfully completed the required trainings and PD courses will be eligible to be recruited as one of our STARTALK-LMU Mandarin Teacher Summer Institute program teachers. Your attendance records and performance during workshops and meetings will be taken into consideration for placement. Successful completion of three, four (4) unit courses with a grade of "B" or better is required to earn the Certificate. Participants can earn a total of up to 12 continuing education units. Prior to course enrollment, participants should check district requirements for CEU acceptance and salary point equivalency.

Participants will design, complete and deliver thematic and standard's-aligned content based lessons with guidance and support from Project instructors and staff. All units/lessons will be assessed by Certificate course instructors with support from the Instructional Leads. Students language portfolios will be used as a way to assess teacher efficacy. Certificate pathway participants will complete e-portfolios with classroom instruction, their lessons and their reflections as part of the culminating experience.
