Intern Practitioner

A candidate following this path is employed full-time at a public school in a district that has a partnership with LMU. The candidate takes courses while teaching full-time. This employment status, along with the required seminars and additional supervision in the classroom provided through LMU, fulfills the field requirements of the credential. Candidates seek out their own employment as Interns unless the candidates are in a cohort program where placement is facilitated through the program (e.g., Teach for America). Interns must be employed to teach at least 60% in the area of the credential, and the contract must state that the teacher is contracted to teach in the area in which the candidate is seeking a credential.

It is necessary that the student complete the program pre-service requirement and hold a University Intern credential in order to be enrolled in the Intern program. University Intern credentials are issued for new placements at the beginning of the fall semester only. Candidates must submit a Verification of Employment form, signed by the School District that holds a partnership agreement with Loyola Marymount University.

Intern / Practitioners Candidate Course Requirements

All students entering the field as University Interns must complete the following:

  • Teach for America (TFA) students complete coursework during Institute and 120 hours of approved California Commission on Teaching (CCTC) online module work set up through LMU in collaboration with the Kern County Office of Education. The three modules include: Ed. Specialist Pedagogy, Classroom Management, Supporting ELL students. These three modules total 105 hours. TFA students are also given 15 hours Credit from TFA Institute resulting in the total 120 CTC required pre-service hours.
  • Non-cohort students entering as University Interns must complete the same modules as listed above (Ed. Specialist Pedagogy, Classroom Management, and Supporting ELL Students). These three modules comprise 105 hours of the mandatory, state based 120 pre-service hours requisite. Based on Candidate experience and Background, in collaboration with an LMU Graduate Advisor and/or the Special Education Program Director, a fourth module will be selected that varies from instructional strategies to classroom management for the final 15 hours.
  • Complete the following courses with a grade of "B" (3.0) or better:
    • EDSS 6600: Evidence-Based Assessment Practices to Promote Student Learning
    • EDSS 6601: (Grades K-8) OR EDSS 6602 (Grades: Secondary) : Language & Literacy in Culturally & Linguistically Diverse Settings
    • EDCE 5981: Clinical Supervision 1
    • EDSS 6603: Creating & Maintaining Effective Environments in Support of Student Learning
    • EDSS 6604: (Grades: Elementary) OR EDSS 6605 (Grades: Secondary): Instructional Design/Methods (Math, STEM, SS)
    • EDCE 5982: Clinical Supervision 2
    • EDSS 6606: Developing Collaborative Partnerships for Inclusive Schooling
    • EDSS 6607: Developing as a Professional Educator (Online Course)
    • EDES 8000: Health Education Course (plus CPR Certification)

Culminating Program Requirements

  • Exit Interview - An exit interview with the Special Education Program Director/Assistant Director must be completed prior to submitting applications for a credential and Master's degree.
  • Reading Instruction Competence Assessment (RICA) - After completing EDSS 6601/6602 Language & Literacy in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Settings (Elementary or Secondary), candidates are required to take, pass and submit an original score report of the RICA to the Special Education program advisor.
  • Application for Credential - When all requirements have been completed, candidates must complete an application for a preliminary teaching credential. Candidates must attend a mandatory credential application meeting. An additional fee required for credential application. See website for more information. Eligibility for the Intern Credential is determined by the following guidelines set by the California Commission on Teacher Credential (CCTC).
  • Optional - Students may elect to take EDSS 6612 Master's Thesis at the end of all other coursework. This course is highly recommended for students who may choose to pursue advanced degrees such as doctoral degrees or apply to graduate schools that require applicants to submit a Master's Thesis. This course will help students develop their Master's Professional Project into an official Thesis. Additionally, students who take this course will receive one on one support from a Faculty member within the Special Education Department to serve as their Thesis Advisor.

Master of Arts in Special Education

The Master of Arts Degree in Special Education enables candidates to develop a deeper understanding of theory, research, and practice in special education with particular concentration on students with mild/moderate disabilities from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

Upon completion of the program, candidates should be prepared for a doctoral program and to make a significant contribution to the field of Special Education.

  • EDCE 5978: Directed Teaching with Students with Mild/Moderate Disabilities (Student Teaching)
  • EDSS 6609: Advanced Inclusionary Practices for Students with High Incidence Disabilities (MA coursework)
  • EDSS 6610: Special Topics in Special Education (MA coursework)
  • EDSS 6611: (OPTIONAL): Master's Thesis

Thesis Option

Students may elect to take EDSS 6612 Master's Thesis at the end of all other coursework. This course is highly recommended for students who may choose to pursue advanced degrees such as doctoral degrees or apply to graduate schools that require applicants to submit a Master's Thesis. This course will help students develop their Master's Professional Project into an official Thesis. Application for Master's Degree

When all requirements have been completed, candidates must complete an application for a Master's Degree with the Office of the Registrar.
