Welcome Message from Dr. Shane Martin, Dean
The Cuban poet José Marti once said that only those who are educated
are truly free. The LMU School of Education is dedicated to the
education of K-12 professionals who will impact countless lives in
local schools and school districts. Our commitment can be summed up in
the four key action words of our Conceptual Framework: respect,
educate, advocate, and lead. The true measure of our success will be
how well we model these concepts in our teaching, scholarship, and
service to the entire community.
This is a very exciting time for the LMU School of Education. We are
accredited by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCATE), and
are only one of five private schools of education in California to have
received this prestigious distinction. We have forged significant
partnerships with the Los Angeles Unified School District, the Lennox
School District, the Los Angeles Catholic Archdiocese, Teach for
America (TFA), and the National Catholic Education Association (NCEA).
Our credential and degree programs are training educators to be
successful teachers, special educators, school counselors and
psychologists, reading and literacy specialists, and administrators in
the public and private urban schools of the Los Angeles region. Our
newest program—an Ed.D. in Leadership for Social Justice—is the first
doctoral program at Loyola Marymount University. The Ed.D. program is
dedicated to preparing future educational leaders for Los Angeles, and
serves as a preeminent illustration of our commitment to improving
urban education for a culturally diverse citizenry. Our partnerships
with Teach for America and with the Archdiocese of Los Angeles for our
PLACE Program (Partners in Los Angeles Catholic Education) focus on
under-resourced public and Catholic schools respectively, further
concretizing our commitment to the inner city and connecting us with
the communities we serve.
There are many more exciting projects on the horizon for the School of
Education We are beginning a partnership with Green Dot Public Schools
to train new principals for small and charter school settings. We will
hold the second summer institute of our LEAD Center (Leadership in
Equity, Advocacy, and Diversity) in partnership with the NCEA. The LEAD
Center will be engaged in a major study of campus culture and climate
for Catholic secondary schools in the U.S. Our faculty members continue
to publish books and research articles, and present at major national
research conferences. Our School of Education continues to grow and
plan for the future.
